Medical Conditions of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
by Malcolm Dupre

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club - USA, had maintained all registrations of Cavaliers in the United States from 1956 until 1995.  This club enforced an extremely strict code of ethics.  Due to the efforts of this club, breeding was controlled in an attempt to maintain the highest of standards. Through strict breeding standards and the constant vigilance of reputable, dedicated breeders, health problems within Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have been kept to a minimum.  Cavaliers are, however, not without faults.
Currently the two major health difficulties facing this breed are : Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) and luxating patellas. Before purchasing a Cavalier pup be sure that both parents are certified clear of these conditions.

Mitral Valve Disease (MVD)
This heart condition is the most serious problem facing the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel today.  This condition can lead to premature death or compromised quality of life. Major efforts are underway, both by the Cavalier clubs and Cavalier breeders to control and eventually eliminated this condition from their beloved breed.
For further information please see : Medical Index/ Mitral Valve Disease.

Luxating Patellas
Luxating patellas is the slipping of the kneecaps.  Luxating patellas is not always genetically produced, but inheritance is a primary source of this condition.
For further information please see : Medical Index/Luxating Patellas.
