Lhasa Apso Medical Conditions
by Jennie Bullock
Lhasa Apsos are basically healthy dogs. Potential
Lhasa Apso purchasers should be aware of thefollowing medical conditions.
Purchasing a well bred pup, from a reputable breeder is the best assurance
of a healthy lifetime companion.
Corneal Ulcers (aka indolent ulcer, recurrent corneal erosion,
or ulcerative keratitis) :
Any scratch or injury to a dog's
eye can result in an ulcer. One cause of a scratch on the eye can
be from the dog's facial hair. Ulcers must be treated by a veterinarian
immediately or there will be some loss of sight. Only a veterinarian
can determine the best treatment or combination of treatments for your
dog. Some lines of Lhasas appear to have more eye problems than others.
For more information please see: Medical
Index/Corneal Ulcers.
Sebacious adenitis
This is a skin condition where the lubricating
glands cease to function. Hair falls out in great quantities, musky
odor, flaking and thickening of the skin are some of the symptoms.
For more information please see : (Medical
Index/Sebacious adenitis).
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
As the name states Progressive
Retinal Atrophy is a progressively degenerative eye disorder. It is hereditary
in nature and detectable through screening. Both parents should be
registered with the CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation).
For more information please see: (Medical
Index/Progressive Retinal Degeneration).
In some bloodlines, Lhasa Apsos may be affected
