Profile of a Rottweiler
by Malcolm Dupre
-
The Rottweiler is a medium - large dog with males measuring between 24
to 27 inches, at the shoulder, and weighing between 95 and 135 pounds.
Bitches generally measure 22 to 25 inches, at the shoulder, and weigh between
80 to 100 pounds. Rottweilers are always black and must have
clearly defined rust or mahogany markings over their eyes, on the sides
of the muzzle, on the throat, chest, and lower legs. Rottweilers
have a straight, coarse, short coat; with an undercoat at the neck and
thighs. The tail is docked short.
-
Rottweilers are compact, powerful
dogs. They are slightly longer than they are tall, and possess a
broad deep chest with a well muscled body. A well bred Rottweiler
is a calm, self confident animal. They have a natural instinct to
protect their home and family.
-
Due to the size and strength
of Rottweilers, it is extremely important that socialization and obedience
training commence from an early age. These dogs are intelligent and
highly trainable, they are however, not an ideal dog for everyone.
Poorly bred Rottweilers can not only be physically (medically) disastrous,
but emotionally a living time-bomb.
-
Not all failings of Rottweilers
are due to poor breeding, owners are also contributors to the success or
failure of the canine/human family unit. Bringing a Rottweiler into
your home takes more than the desire to have a cute puppy - it requires
the dedication to follow through with a training schedule and the commitment
to form a working bond with your new family member.
