A small-sized dog easily adapts to life in a city apartment, and yet it requires attention, daily activity and education no less than its larger counterparts. The following breeds are suitable for the role of a miniature companion:

  • Boston terrier – cheerful, affectionate, brave, friendly. Gets along with absolutely everyone: with strangers, children, dogs and cats. Loyal and companionable. Strongly attached to the owner, happily accompanies him everywhere. Calmly relates to temporary loneliness. Needs frequent walks due to physiology. In education requires persistence and discipline.
  • Jack Russell Terrier – a frequent companion of active people and children. Funny, cheerful, so energetic that can prank and run all day without fatigue. Sociable, brave, hardworking and playful. Not made for a passive lifestyle. Perfectly amenable to training, but requires patience and persistence. Training should be started as early as possible.
  • The Yorkshire Terrier is an emotional, temperamental pet. Small, but brave and independent. Affectionate, companionable, sociable, intelligent. Strives to dominate and needs skillful training. Properly educated yorkie will become a loyal companion, which will literally everywhere accompany the owner – in loneliness, the pet is very homesick.
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – affectionate, delicate, calm, unobtrusive dog. Playful, cheerful, friendly, gets along with absolutely everyone. Easily adjusts to the lifestyle of the owner, whether it is a restless child or an elderly person. Requires early socialization and training from the first months, but even the owner without experience will cope with the task: the pet is docile and tends to please in everything.
  • Maltese (Maltese Bolognese) is a snow-white dog with a lively character. Curious, sociable, peaceful and entirely human-oriented. With strangers wary, can give a voice to warn of “danger”. Not recommended for families with small children: needs careful handling. Requires persistent training, but with a competent approach can learn tricks and excel in agility.
  • Pug is a companion dog with a balanced psyche. Unobtrusive, not noisy, prefers a measured lifestyle. Will gladly support games or go for a walk with the owner. Affectionate, friendly, adores children, gets along with other pets. Does not like loneliness – prefers human company. It is reluctant to be trained, but thanks to its intelligence and love of treats it quickly learns commands.
  • The Papillon is a pet with touching, large ears and a cheerful personality. It strives to be constantly close to its beloved owner and actively explores the world around it – as long as it does not sit still. Affectionate, sociable, intelligent, playful. Quickly learns commands and canine sports.
  • Dachshund – calm, energetic, affectionate, playful dog. Indifferent to strangers, independent, brave. Needs persistent but gentle training from puppyhood. Requires daily walks and exercise. Excellent partner for active people of any age: well tolerates trips in transport, loves moving games, hiking and traveling.
  • Zwergpinscher is a companion, which is very important to be near the owner all the time. Sociable, playful, affectionate. Active and energetic, requires daily walks, physical and intellectual exercise. Perfectly memorizes and executes commands, if the owner takes the time to educate. Keeps active and cheerful disposition to old age and will never refuse to play with children.
  • The Chihuahua is a natural companion who is vital to follow his owner wherever he goes. He requires a lot of attention and gets stressed when he is alone. Adapts quickly to new environments and can be an ideal traveling partner. Energetic and intelligent, needs persistent training and play. Attaches to one owner. The breed is not recommended for families with preschool-aged children.
  • Shih Tzu is a brave, cheerful, sociable dog, loyal to the owner and his family members. Balanced, unobtrusive, friendly. Equally loves all the inhabitants of the house. Hardly survives loneliness. Loves affection, attention, games, does not tolerate rough handling. Does not require too active walks. Needs education and early socialization. Suitable for people of any age.
  • Japanese Hin – smart, curious, calm pet, is considered one of the best companions. Good-natured, cute, brave, sociable. Easily learns commands and tricks, if competently organize the process of training. Very fond of children, including small ones. Gets along with other pets. It is difficult to stay alone. Will fit perfectly into a large family or become a loyal friend for one owner, including the elderly.
